SMART AWARDS SA001 SAFETY OVERHEAD NETWORK OPERATORS COURSE:

***PRACTICALLY LEARN THE SAFETY REQUIREMENTS FOR LADDER SAFETY, POLE CHECKING AND CLIMBING AND AS REQUIRED BY NETWORK OPERATORS SUCH AS BT & CONTRACTORS***

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course covers three modules:

LADDER SAFETY:

POLE CHECKING AND CLIMBING:

JOINT USER POLES: (optional)

It provides learners with the knowledge and skills of the hazards and potential risks involved in working safely on ladders and wooden poles in a telecommunications environment. It also helps learners’ awareness of compliance with health and safety legislation. The course tests learners’ knowledge, skills and understanding of dangers associated with these works and the safety precautions required while working on ladders and wooden poles.

This course ensures that leaners involved in working on ladders and poles are suitably trained and accredited to the National Occupational Standard (NOS). This course is aimed at those working on ladders and wooden poles in a telecommunications environment.

This course does not cover roof top working.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

By the end of the course you will be proficient in the following:

MODULE 1 LADDER SAFETY:
  • Knowledge of the regulations that need to be observed when working at height.
  • Knowledge of how to complete risk assessments in various scenarios.
  • Knowledge of the correct manual handling techniques.
  • The ability to complete safety checks for all ladders and steps to be used.
  • The ability to correctly check and fit a safety equipment.
  • The ability to complete a ladder pre-use check.
  • Knowledge of how to erect and guard a ladder.
  • Knowledge of how to secure a ladder against a solid structure.
  • The ability to correctly check that the ladder is stable and is safe for working on.
  • The ability to correctly climb a ladder.
  • Knowledge of how to secure a ladder with a knot, raise tools to the working position and adopt a safe drilling position.
  • Knowledge of how to safely work on ladders and step ladder.
MODULE 2 POLE CHECKING AND CLIMBING:
  • An awareness of pole markings.
  • An awareness of sterile poles.
  • Knowledge of the pre-works check.
  • Knowledge of the pole test process.
  • An awareness of low wire procedure.
  • Knowledge of how to use ladders on wooden poles.
  • Knowledge of how to climb a pole.
  • Knowledge of how to overcome obstacles on poles.
  • Knowledge of how to turn on a pole.
  • Knowledge of how to work safely off pole steps and ladder.
  • Knowledge of safe climb zones.
MODULE 3 JOINT USER POLES:
  • Knowledge on how to recognise low and high voltage poles.
  • Knowledge on how to access joint user poles.
  • Understand safe working on joint user poles.

COURSE DURATION

The delivery of the course will be based on the needs and experience of the learners.

Module 1: 1 Day Ladder safety

Module 2: 1 Day Pole checking and climbing

Module 3: ½ Day Joint user poles (Optional)

QUALIFICATION and ASSESSMENT

This course is a practical hands on based programme. With almost everything other than the essential theory being practical exercises. As such this course has been approved by Smart Awards the industry recognised awarding body. With participants able to gain the certification and network operators Passport card. You can download the details of the card here Network Operators Passport Smart Awards qualifications are recognised by all the network operators, BT, Eircom, Virgin, Siro, Vodafone etc. Along with the 400 Contractors that work for them.

ASSESSMENT:

These modules will be assessed through a practical and theory test at the end of the course. The aim of the assessment is to ensure successful learners have adequate knowledge and understanding of working safely where underground spaces or structures present additional risks.

GRADING

Practical assessment: Pass: Less than 6 minor faults. Fail: 1 critical fault or 6 or more

Theory: Pass over 80% (15 questions)

PRE-REQUISITES

There are no formal entry requirements and Fibre contractors will not restrict access on the grounds of prior academic attainment, age, employment, geographic location or any other grounds. There are no barriers that restrict access or progression, thereby promoting equality. It is expected however that learners will have a level of literacy adequate to cope with both the theory and practical assessments.

This course does not qualify an individual to enter a confined space. Those individuals who need to enter confined spaces MUST hold appropriate accreditation / qualification to enter confined spaces. Any references made in this material to confined spaces are for information only and to make learners aware of the risks and presence of gases that may also be present in confined spaces.

TARGET AUDIANCE

The target audience is aimed at those working on the telecoms network or similar utilities including suppliers and contractors.

AGE LIMIT

This course is available to anyone over the age of 16 who is capable of reaching the required standard. There are no barriers that restrict access or progression thereby promoting equal opportunity.

Our centre has been put together with a practical working area, designed to ensure you gain the maximum benefit from this course.
